Ab Lounger: Use At Your Own Risk

The Ab Lounger is a product that supposedly trains your abs without much spinal flexion. I have used it myself and while I got a pretty good ab workout, I ultimately had problems. I trained with it 3 times a week, 30 minutes each workout.

I started to see some results, but the side effects for me turned out to be dangerous. It is true that it's an easier movement compared to sit-ups, but after using this for several months I started to have back pain, especially around waist and hips. At first I didn't know why, but when I got up from my Ab Lounger one day, I had severe back pain. I consulted a doctor and he suggested to reduce my training frequency with it. I followed his suggestion and I feel much better.

I no longer use my Ab Lounger. I regret buying this product, after my bad experience with it. Even now I am reluctant to buy a similar product due to the trauma. I don't want to risk my spine only to get better abs.

My advice is to conserve your money, there are much better methods and equipment to work your abs with less side effects. The developer of this product should do more research and then make a better product with more satisfying results without the dangers.

Cost Of A Personal Trainer

Just yesterday I met with my trainer for what will the be the last time. Unfortunately, the cost of a personal trainer became an issue for me. I am kind of upset about this because, to be honest, I think she's a great trainer; probably the best I've ever met with. Unfortunately the cost of a personal trainer is pretty high... she charges $50 per session, and this is the reason I won't be going back.

My favorite thing about her is her sense of humor. I am not the most serious of people, but I am serious about getting fit. I do not respond well to the types of trainers that scream and yell at you and push you to your limit. I respond much better to someone that instructs me on what to do, where I should feel the "burn", and proper form when performing weight training. The fact that this trainer could also make me laugh was a huge deal to me as well, as it made the time go by much quicker, and made me less embarrassed when my arms/legs would give out on me.

In summary, to me a good personal trainer is knowledgeable, friendly, and funny. If only the cost of a personal trainer was less costly, I would definitely stay with her.

Ab Lounger: Does It Work?

I just bought my Ab Lounger 4 weeks ago and have already lost 6 1/2 pounds. Does it work? I am already SEEING and feeling better muscle tone in not only my abdominal area, but my back, arms, butt, hips and upper legs. I have only been working out on it for about 5 minutes in the morning, and a time or two through out the day, (when I have a minute.)

This is a great machine, especially for those with very busy schedules. I have 2 office jobs, and work very long hours, and have to take care of a house and family. I don't have a lot of time to work out every day. Literally only a few minutes at a time.

The Ab Lounger is also very comfortable to use, and has even helped ease my sciatica. I would recommend starting off with a low number of repetitions for a few days before increasing the number. If you're straining too much to finish the repetitions, stay with it until its easier. Be sure to breathe correctly. I usually do some simple warm ups and stretches before doing the workout. I enjoy the lounger and vow to stick with it every day! If you slack off...you need to work up to the repetitions you were doing, rather than jump right back into high numbers. A GREAT product! It does work. No kidding!

Ab Lounger: Great Ab Workout for People with Back and Neck Problems

I bought the Ab Lounger a few years ago online. I think it's a great ab workout if you have back or neck problems.
The assembly (as far as I can remember), wasn?t too difficult for me. At first, I really liked it. It?s a novel gadget and I had it in front of the TV so that I could do my ab exercises while I watched my favorite shows (which helps A LOT).

If you do the exercises properly, you WILL feel the burn the next day. However, you MUST do them right or you are wasting your time and could hurt yourself. I think I used it religiously for a few months before the hand straps started to wear out. I did see results in those few months of use. However, once it started falling apart, I moved on to other ab exercises. I?d made tremendous gains using my ab lounger and no longer needed the neck support or back support because my abs were finally stronger as a result of using the ab lounger.

I would completely recommend this for someone just starting out exercising again, especially if you are having lower back or neck problems like I did and need to strengthen your abs.

Biggest Loser On NBC

The Biggest Loser on NBC is a long running weight loss show. It's a very successful show (which I enjoy), helping a lot of people lose weight, while motivating millions of others to do the same. Having said that, it's inexplicable to me that they start every season the way they do: by risking the lives of the horribly out of shape, high risk contestants. On the very first day they put them through intense workouts that are completely inappropriate and way beyond their capacities. There is no way you should take someone as poorly conditioned, with as many risk factors as the show's contestants have, and start them out with high intensity workouts. Yet they do it each and every season. The fact that the show has a doctor, Dr. Rob Huizenga, overseeing everything makes it even more inexplicable.

It is foolish. It is reckless. It is negligent.

It violates one the basic principles of exercise prescription, which is Progression. But I guess a gradual progression of training that is required here doesn't make good TV. You've got to show how tough you are by working them to the edge of collapse from the beginning.

One of the contestants from Season 6, Jerry Skeabeck, was a 51 year old, 380 lb. man who the show's doctor described as the sickest person ever on the show, with every risk factor known in medicine. On Day 1, tough gal trainer Jillian Michaels had him on the treadmill until he fell off from exhaustion. She literally screamed at him, "the only way you're going to come off this treadmill is if you die." This is INSANE. No responsible trainer would do this. Similar scenes have gone on in almost every season.

After the 1st day, the doctor wisely restricted Jerry to 30 minutes a day of exercise. Why did it take a day to do that?? They knew what kind of shape he and all the contestants were in. Why would Huizenga allow the initial workout to be conducted like that and why don't the trainers know any better. Their first concern should be the safety of the contestants, not good TV.

Thankfully, Jillian Michaels is leaving the Biggest Loser on NBC. She's getting out now before her negligence leads to an actual death of a participant. She's moving on to an empire of exercise products and endorsements that were created from the popularity of the show. That's her reward for setting a terrible example of what a trainer should be for all these years.

Every season The Biggest Loser on NBC risks the lives of it's high risk contestants by pushing them too hard, too fast. If someone ever dies during this process, the show will be completely liable. I hope they have good liability insurance because it would only require about a 5 minute trial to demonstrate their complete negligence. They are grossly violating proven medical and exercise prescription guidelines and should know better. It's a disgrace. It's too bad too, because the show otherwise does some good with the large number of people it inspires.

Subway Diet

The Subway Diet was originated by Jared Fogle (known as The Subway Guy) in 1998. Fogle was a 425 pound college student who was able to lose 245 lbs. in 11 months by eating primarily Subway sandwiches twice a day. After losing the first 100 pounds, Fogle added walking 1.5 miles a day into his daily activities.

Fogle was discovered when a former college student, who ran into him and barely recognized him in the spring of ?99, wrote an article about him for the Indiana Daily Student newspaper. The article told of Fogle?s amazing weight loss and how he did it. The article was picked up by Men?s Health magazine and the Associated Press, where the diet was referred to as the ?Subway sandwich diet?. He quickly heard from the ad agency that handled Subway.

The first commercials introducing Jared Fogle and his story ran in January 2000. Subway initially had doubts about whether they could market itself promoting the health aspects of it?s fast food. They also had concerns about liability issues relating to it being a type of medical claim. Those doubts however, quickly melted away. The ad was a hit and began running nationally, while attracting lots of media attention. People were motivated by Fogle?s story and a lot of people credited their own weight loss to following their own version of the diet. Subway sales doubled over the time of running more than 50 different Jared commercials. In 2008 Subway celebrated Fogle?s 10 year anniversary of keeping the weight off.

What Do You Eat? Subway Sandwiches! The diet Jared Fogle used consisted of 2 Subway sandwiches. He rarely ate breakfast. When he did it would be a piece of fruit or some cereal with skim milk.

Lunch: Six inch Turkey sub, a diet soda, and small bag of baked potato chips or pretzels.

Dinner: Same as lunch except for the sub is a Foot-long Veggie Delite sandwich.

The total calories for this diet is approximately 1,000. On Jared's sandwiches he would have green peppers, jalapeno peppers, pickles, and lettuce. He left off the higher calorie condiments like cheese, mayonnaise, and oil, instead using vinegar or spicy mustard. He would alternate between wheat and white bread.

Reviews There hasn?t been much research into the Subway Diet. In 2002 the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) praised Subway and Fogle for ?helping lead the way to healthier fast food.? They rated Subway?s low-fat subs as among the best fast foods. The failure to include breakfast in the diet has drawn some criticism, as it should.

Bottom Line You will lose weight if you follow the portioned controlled, 1,000 calorie a day Subway Diet. It?s convenient and easy to follow. It requires very little thinking or choice.

The possible drawbacks are obvious. You have to go to a Subway everyday. You?d better LOVE Subway sandwiches to be eating them twice a day. If you get sick of them, that?s the end of the diet. You also aren?t going to eat like that the rest of your life. That?s a key test in rating the quality of a diet. Plus, how do you transition into eating food other than Subway when you?re done with the diet?

There?s not a lot of variety nutritionally speaking. The lack of variety could possibly lead to a vitamin and/or mineral deficiency over time. Breakfast should be included if you try this diet. A 200-300 calorie breakfast would make the diet a lot healthier, without compromising weight loss at all.

While there is very little variety in the Subway Diet, it could work for you in the short term, as it has for many people. Just understand that it is not a long term solution.

So the AL trains your abs without much spine flexion and primarily with a static contraction. That's good. Hip Flexion Focus The primary movement involved when using the AL is hip flexion, which is bringing the thigh up towards the abdomen (jackknife). When you do a crunch, the movement is spine flexion. The muscles that produce hip flexion attach on your pelvis, spine, and thigh. They aren't ab muscles. So while your ab muscles are involved, the AL emphasizes muscles other than your abs. In addition, overdeveloped and tight hip flexors can contribute to lower back pain by causing the pelvis to tilt forward.

Risking Your Back Besides targeting your hip flexor muscles (which can lead to back problems), the machine allows you to hyperextend your back at the bottom of the movement (when you're fully stretched out). This can put potentially damaging pressure on your low spine.

Effectiveness A recent study at Slippery Rock University (as reported in Men's Health/ Sept 2010) measured muscle activation in 5 different ab gadgets compared to the classic sit up. In both upper and lower ab activation the sit up beat the AL. In fact, the AL came in 5th in both categories.

Fat Loss Any talk of losing love handles or fat loss from using any piece of ab equipment is false. Spot reducing doesn't work. Working your ab muscles won't burn the fat in your abdominal area. That can only come from expending more calories than you're consuming through a combination of diet and exercise (cardio and strength training).

Verdict: The Ab Lounger costs over a $100, is less effective than sit ups, takes up space in your house, and could potentially injure your back. Save your money and save your back. Just say no to the Ab Lounger.

Alternatives There are many more effective ways to work your abs other than an AL or sit ups/crunches. The Plank, Side Plank, Ab Wheel, and the Exercise Ball Roll Out are examples of superior ab exercises. All of them involve little or no spine movement (making them safer) and work your core in a way that crunches can't match.

Lie on the mat and place the feet flat on the floor with the knees bent. Hold on to the handles and curl the AB Shaper forward to a 45-degree angle. Lower and repeat for 10 to 15 repetitions. Perform a basic crunch and bring the knees into the chest. Return the upper and lower body to starting position and repeat for 10 to 15 reps. Finish with a twisting oblique crunch. Bring both knees to one side with the legs one inch off of the ground. Perform five to seven reps before switching sides.

Advanced Exercises

Move on to challenging advanced exercises after you have mastered the intermediate exercises. Pratice an “L” crunch by raising the legs straight up into the air. Perform a basic crunch as above but keep the legs in the air the entire time. Next, move on to an advanced raised-knee crunch. Extend the legs out in front of you one inch off of the ground. Perform a crunch and bring the knees into the chest. Release and straighten the legs out once more keeping them above the ground. Finish off with an advanced twisting crunch. Start with the legs extended and just off of the floor. Perform a basic crunch and bring the knees towards the upper left side of the body. Lower the upper and lower body and repeat to the opposite side. Perform 10 to 15 reps of all advanced exercises.

Considerations

Using only an AB Shaper will not give you six-pack abs. The exercise device should be combined with a healthy diet and a well-rounded exercise plan that includes cardiovascular exercise and strength training. Consult your physician before you begin any exercise program.

Best Diet For Weight Loss

QUESTION: I am wanting to lose 20 pound by June of this year. I was wondering if you had suggestions on a good diet that I could go on. What is the best diet for weight loss? I am really wanting to do this, but I need a little guidance and some encouragement. I have tried dieting before but failed. I do not want to fail this time.

ANSWER: Chrissy: If you lost a pound a week between now and the end of June, you would reach your goal. Losing 1-2 pounds a week is the healthy way to do it. You can do that.

There are a number of ways you can go about reaching your goal.

The first question you need to ask when evaluating any diet is, can I eat this way the rest of my life? The best diet for weight loss results in you adapting healthy eating habits that you can continue forever. Many diets use extreme measures and eating choices that may work temporarily, but are not a way of eating that you can use for any extended period. As soon as you go off the "diet" you regain the weight.

There are many ways you can go. I recommend the Abs Diet for Women (or Men) by David Zinczenko for many of my clients. Weight Watchers is another plan that works for a lot of people. Just counting calories and limiting yourself to 1200-1400 calories a day can be effective.

Here are the principles of effective dieting no matter what specific plan you're using:

* Eat 4-5 small to medium meals/snacks a day, evenly spaced throughout the day. Avoid going long periods without eating.

* Limit carb intake, especially white refined carbs: white bread, pasta, potatoes, white rice, etc.

* Avoid refined foods, saturated fats, trans fat, sugar, and high fructose corn syrup.

* Focus on high fiber (fruits/vegetables), high protein foods as the basis of your diet. Try to include some lean protein with every meal/snack. Poultry, fish, lean cuts of beef, egg whites, whey protein powder, soy, and low fat dairy products are all good sources of lean protein.

* Allow yourself one cheat meal a week where you eat anything you want. It will keep you from feeling so deprived of foods you like.

Exercise is a critical part of any weight loss plan. Using cardio interval training and functional strength training is the best way to build lean (not bulky) muscle. The more muscle you have, the higher your metabolism and fat burning capacity will be. Check out my How To Lose Love Handles page. I go into more detail about how the combination of healthy diet, interval training, and strength training is the most effective way to lose fat and build lean muscle. That's what you want. It's not just about losing weight on a scale. It's about developing a healthy body composition (low body fat/high lean muscle mass).

--Soda and carbonated drinks can cause bloat. Drink sparingly and avoid drinking through a straw.

--If you suffer from lactose intolerance, products such as LactAid and Dairy Ease can break down the lactose in dairy foods.

--Limit fatty foods. Fried foods take a long time to digest. Aim for healthy fats such as salmon, olive oil, nuts and seeds.

--Spicy foods, along with pepper, chili powder, garlic and hot sauces can trigger the stomach to produce more acid.

--Sugar substitutes may not be absorbed by the digestive tract properly. That can cause gas and diarrhea. Xylitol is one to especially be cautious with.

--Eat plenty of fiber. Fiber keeps everything moving thorough your colon. That helps avoid constipation, which is a common cause of bloating. Be sure to drink lots of water with your additional fiber.

--If you think certain foods are causing you bloating, keep a food diary. By writing down when symptoms occur you can identify what your problem foods may be.

All of the above are good ways to prevent belly bloat. Don't let your six pack turn into a keg.

How Do I Get Tighter Abs and A Washboard Stomach?

QUESTION: I exercise a lot. I have reduced my obliques and abs, but want tighter abs. What can I do to get that washboard stomach. I'm a male, 36 yrs old.

ANSWER: Glad to hear that you've had some success in reducing your obliques and abs. That's a good start. In order to take it to another level you'll need to continue to lose fat. The key to getting washboard abs is a low body fat level.

Diet is 90% of a six pack. I like the Abs Diet For Men, but whatever healthy eating plan that can get you down to a 10-12% body level is fine.

Getting tighter abs is the easy part compared to the diet side of the equation. I don't know what kind of ab workouts you're doing now, but like most people, it probably includes a lot of crunches.

Believe it or not, you can get a six pack without doing a single crunch. My own ab workout includes only one set of crunches on a stability ball. Research has shown that in most real life activities the ab and core muscles work much more as stabilizers to stiffen the torso and prevent motion in the trunk, rather than movers of the trunk and spine.

So I would focus on ab stabilizer exercises. They are more functional and effective. Exercises such as the plank, the side plank, plank on a ball, and the ab wheel (or ball rollout) are the key ab stabilizer exercises. They make up 90% of my own ab workout. I also do the swiss ball jackknife and mountain climbers, along with push ups with my hands on two medicine balls. This works your core to an incredible extent.

In 5 minutes of work these kinds of exercises can strengthen your core, tone your abs, and protect your back more than 10,000 crunches can.

Spend 10-15 minutes doing these exercises, 3 times a week and you can have a strong core, toned abs, and a six pack.....IF you can get your body fat low enough. That's still the key.

Unfortunately, it is true that training a certain area will not make you lose weight in that area. What you're describing is called "Spot Reducing". It is one of the biggest Ab myths and it has been used to sell a lot of Ab products on infomercials over the years. You can read about more ab myths on my Ab Workout Basics page.

The way to lose ab fat is the same way you lose fat in any area: consuming fewer calories than you're burning. It's not complicated, but unfortunately it's not easy. Doing that will cause you to lose fat from all over your body, with the majority coming from the areas that have the most to lose.

The best way to lose fat is to eat a healthy, low calorie diet, do cardio training (with interval training being the best), and do strength training. Interval training will burn the most calories, along with giving you the best "after burn"....the amount of calories you burn up to 24 hours after working out. Strength training will also result in a good "after burn", along with building fat-burning lean muscle.

It's also a good idea to do ab training 3x a week as part of your strength training workouts. Even though you won't be burning the fat in your lower abs, you'll firm and tone the ab muscles under the fat. That will help flatten your belly. Check out the Best Core Exercises and Stomach Flattening Exercises for some good ab exercises. Definitely include the Plank as part of your workout. It's one of the best core exercises and will strengthen and flatten your abs better than almost any ab exercise.
